


The town of Strathalbyn, with the Mediterranean climate, has a rich history and is an antique paradise for the avid collector. This little town is full of life, very vibrant and very pretty in its surroundings which is an attraction for people to visit as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The history of the town dates back to the 1800’s by Scottish migrants, and you can see the Celtic influence around the town on the buildings. Strathalbyn is well known for its antiques and there are many antique dealers in High Street.
In August each year there is a popular antique and collectors fair and this includes several halls packed with antique treasures.
Strathalbyn also has a thriving arts community with small galleries in the district where displays are regularly changed. You can enjoy the local art as you sip a Latte at one of the many Cafes.
The Angus River flows through the town where the Soldiers Memorial Gardens sweep the river bank. This is is a popular place for community events or to enjoy a family picnic. With the historic stone, slate walls and old cottages you can see the Scottish influence by the pioneers who settled here. There are many old stone buildings with lace work from cast iron. A number of buildings are heritage listed making Strathalbyn the appropriate centre for antique shopping but still with the country town feel. The town supports the local beef, sheep and cereal farms and there is a popular country livestock market every Thursday.
Make sure you find time to visit the Police Station and Courthouse, which is the original complex from yesteryear. You will find many interesting things within this district museum.
Strathalbyn will be a good base while you explore the exciting surrounding area’s such as the Wine region of Langhorne Creek.
